How to read bass clef notes above the staff. The bass clef notates the lower registers of music, so if your instrument has a lower pitch, such as a bassoon, tuba or cello, your sheet music is written in the bass clef. On the grand staff, the middle c note is placed between the two clefs. The next one you probably already know is: Each line and space is assigned a specific note, with the lines being g, b, d, f, a, and the spaces a, c, e and g, starting from the bottom of the bass clef staff.
They are pretty easy to figure out if you just start counting from either the bottom/first line of the staff downward, or starting with the top line f, and going upwards. To read the bass clef, start by looking at the 4 spaces along the staff. The bass clef is also known as the f clef, and the note below the stave is f which makes it easy to remember.
In piano sheet music, notes above and below the staff will have lines above/below them, there are usually one, two or three of these lines and they simply act as an extension of the staff. For example, you can see the note f on a treble clef’s topmost line. Ledger lines are super simple.
If we need to add higher or lower notes to the composition, we can simply keep adding the extra lines above or below the staff. That’s because the bas clef is also the f clef! Notice how it is written just one ledger line above the staff.
In the bass staff, we also count the lines and spaces from the bottom to the top. Identifying where that note is located on the fretboard. The line above that space is a b.
There are two ways of reading piano bass clef notes: If the ledger line note is above the staff, all you have to do is continue counting the notes in alphabetical order. If you're trying to figure out a note below the staff, you need to cycle backwards through the music alphabet.

The top line of the bass clef is the note ‘a.’ if we were to extend the staff to the next note, it would be a space and called ‘b’.
The five lines on the treble clef represent (in ascending order) the notes e, g, b, d. But we know the keyboard has a lot more notes than that, so ledger lines are used to show notes that go beyond the staff. The first note i will bring your attention to is the note on the line within the staff.
Lower notes on your keyboard also are notated in the bass clef. The bottom space is the first space and the top space is the 4th space. The notes in the spaces of the bass staff follow the pattern above as well, with an added bonus!
From the bottom to the top, use the phrase “all cows eat grass” to help you remember that those notes are a, c, e, and g. The best way to learn how to read notes is with guide notes. Music notes above and below the staff are read as extensions of the staff.
